Protect yourself!
If you absolutely must use a credit card, then make plans to prepare and use a Dedicated Internet Shopping Credit Card or DISCC. This is simply a credit or debit card that is used for nothing other than internet purposes.
Your DISCC can be tied to your payment processor account, but any bank account associated with this credit card should not be your primary bank account for your everyday finances. Instead, it should be a bank account that is setup for use just for internet purposes.

There are two truths we want to tell you about. The first is setting up an account and the second is sales.
Using the Internet involves creating accounts for many of the online applications that you will use. Maintaining the integrity of your account is paramount. To this end, you must keep up with the various user names and passwords that you setup with each application. Trust nobody completely, and use different passwords for each of the applications that you use. Do not make your passwords too simple. Be careful to keep a safe log of your user ID's and passwords. Protect yourself! If this is too much of a hassle for you, then an internet business is probably not for you.
The second truth is the fact that an internet business involves sales and advertising. You must do sales either directly or indirectly.
Many people hate to do sales because they hate to hear the word 'no'. If this is a problem for you, then an internet business may not be for you. Generally, salespeople know that you make one sale for every ten or more people you talk to -- on a good day. If you need to make ten sales a day to be successful, then you have to approach more than 100 people a day or get them to approach you!
On the Internet, we multiply that one sale count a hundred-fold to one sale every 1000 visitors or more! We casually refer to visitors as 'clicks' because of the role of the mouse for computers and laptops. Therefore, to get ten sales a day you need to get over ten thousand visitors or clicks to your business a day! This kind of volume we refer to as traffic. Without traffic, how can you get sales?
This is not to suggest that you cannot make more sales with less traffic. Of course, this is possible on a good day. However, we suggest that you plan for the worse and hope for the best. Being prepared helps you to stay the course.
You must actively advertise to get your business in front of customers to make sales. This means that you must invest in methods to put your business in front of people that you cannot personally reach. You may also need to be creative so as to save on advertising dollars and cents. Regardless, your advertising must become regular and measurable, with respect to effectiveness.
Advertising usually costs money. How much? It depends on your advertising materials, methods, and locations. You will need your current job, if you have one, to fund the advertising of your internet business. Advertising can be fun, but it can also put a strain on your enthusiasm and motivation.
An immediate goal of advertising your internet business is to generate supplemental income. The supplemental income is to be used for future advertising and to replace your initial advertising funding source. If your supplemental income can eventually support your advertising then you are well on your way to success!

What Kind Of Business To Choose?
This is entirely up to you. We base the following brief descriptions on the assumption that you will be associated with a product or service that the "average person" would want to buy and/or be associated with. You can define an "average person" to your liking.
The internet is full of different kinds of businesses. We have assembled here a representative sampling of them. Of course, you can create your very own business.
If you have your own product or service, then you determine your sales price and profit margins. We refer to this as Direct Sales. All of the product or service sales go to you.
If you will be selling someone else's product or service for a portion of the sales price, then we refer to that as Affiliate Marketing and you are the affiliate. You will be getting a percentage of the product or service sales. There are a number of affiliate marketing programs that are available to you. Each of them contains tens or even hundreds of vendors with products and services you may be very familiar with. You can join any of these programs as an affiliate and sell products from any of their vendors; that is, provided the vendor approves you as an affiliate. In fact, you would become an additional associate of the vendor company and they reserve the right to carefully review your qualifications.
There is a form of Affiliate Marketing (A/M) that we refer to as GPT: Get Paid Today. In this form of A/M you pay a fee to market a product or service. You gain an identical website as the one you responded to. Now you can advertise accordingly and all of the sales money goes directly to you. No more percentages of sales!
If you will be making money by referring others to a product or service, then we refer to that as Referral Marketing and you will be earning a referral commission based on each of your referrals. In addition, if you will also be earning from the purchases of your referrals, then we refer to that as Residual Income or Passive Income.
It is important for us to emphasize to you that referral income and residual income are the stuff that dreams are made of! They make it possible. Ask any insurance salesman. Furthermore, many internet businesses have referral commission plans that not only pay you for your referrals, they pay you for your referral’s referrals. Sometimes, these commission plans are several layers deep. Do not think of one to five referrals. Think of tens and hundreds! Think “Yes, I can”.
There are also Franchises that you can purchase and earn from selling the franchise products. It depends on the franchise program as to what percentage of sales you, the franchisee, get to keep. You might also be able to earn from selling similar franchises to others.
There are Matrix programs that you can join. A matrix is similar to a tic-tac-toe board. Each spot is filled by a member who joins the matrix and pays a fee. The designated first spot on the matrix is the payoff spot. Once the matrix is filled with paid members, the member in the payoff spot receives the payoff amount and leaves the matrix. Then all of the other members advance towards the payoff spot. Then another member is in the payoff spot and waits until a new member joins the matrix to fill it again. This process repeats as long as new members join the matrix.
A special form of matrix program allows you to rejoin the matrix structure, at the entry level, after you have cycled out. We refer to such a program as a Cycler because you get to cycle through the matrix structure more than once.
There are also Revenue Share programs that you can join. All of the members of a revenue share program buy a product or service to join. The product or service can be an advertising package or whatever. This qualifies them to share in the program’s revenue pool. The revenue pool would be the funds acquired from selling the advertising, packages or services, franchises, matrices, contests, and/or other forms of income. The important thing to realize is that all of the members share a percentage of what is in the revenue pool. That percentage may vary between revenue share programs. The revenue share program decides on what percentage of the pool is shared, but does not guarantee a fixed percentage or that there will always be a pool from which to share. The more you buy into the revenue share program, the more you make. You can also earn referral commissions for referring others to join.
Lastly, we will mention Subscription Services. These are offers or claims for products or services that ask for your name and an email address. Once you submit your information, you have actually signed up for an email subscription from that offer. You will probably begin to receive daily emails from them promoting additional offers for you to join. What they have done is built their list by enlisting you and anyone else who eventually signs up. The more people they can show their offers to, the more sales they can achieve. The good thing is that subscription services are generally free and you have the right to end the service at your leisure.
You too can run a subscription service and begin to build a list of customers to whom you can advertise your business. The more people who see your business the more sales you may be able to make. You may even discover that you have a loyal base of customers from whom you get repeat and referral income.
Some other kinds of businesses you can choose will be covered later after we cover different kinds of advertising. Speaking of which, running an advertising business can be quite profitable if you can master the special needs for such a business. You may have noticed that the revenue share business, above, is a special instance of an advertising company.
There are also other kinds of internet businesses that are combinations or twists of all of the above. We advise you to always read the fine print for internet businesses that you review. No matter which you choose, or the mix, it is your money and your business which is at risk. Decide to invest in a business that you can be proud of; a business that lends you a respectable reputation.
Personally and professionally, we suggest that you bounce your ideas off some of our friends. They are your potential customers and they can be brutally honest with you. You will know that your idea is good if they want to become a partner.
Nevertheless, beware. There are many opportunities that are not reputable and some are scams. Being a scam is not a condemnation; nor is it a deal breaker. Always, buyer beware. Many brick and mortar stores operate a "bait and switch" scam to some extent. It's all about marketing and getting people to view your product or service. What you make of it and how you handle your customers can turn a scam into a lucrative business with raving comments of approval.
Remember, MySpace management surely looked at Facebook as a scam and a rip-off. Univac and Burroughs felt the same about IBM in the 1950's and 1960's.
